What is Puddle Flange?

A puddle flange is a specialized waterproofing component designed to create a watertight seal around pipes, conduits, and other penetrations passing through concrete structures. Also known as a puddle plate or waterstop flange, this essential construction element consists of a metal or plastic collar that is welded or attached to pipes before they are cast into concrete. The puddle flange features a flat, wide flange portion that gets embedded within the concrete during the pouring process, creating an impermeable barrier that prevents water infiltration along the pipe’s exterior surface.

In the UAE construction industry, particularly in Dubai, Abu Dhabi, and Sharjah, puddle flanges play a critical role in waterproofing basements, water tanks, swimming pools, sewage treatment plants, and underground structures. These components are manufactured from various materials including mild steel, stainless steel (SS304, SS316), galvanized iron, and high-density polyethylene (HDPE), depending on the application requirements and environmental conditions.

The design of a puddle flange typically includes a central collar that fits snugly around the pipe diameter and an extended circular or square flange plate that ranges from 150mm to 300mm in width. This extended portion gets completely encased in concrete, forming a mechanical bond that prevents water from traveling along the pipe-concrete interface. The flange acts as a physical barrier, forcing any water attempting to seep through to travel around the extended plate rather than following the pipe’s path.

Puddle flanges are essential in meeting international waterproofing standards such as BS EN 14188 and local UAE building codes. They are particularly crucial in regions with high water tables, areas prone to flooding, or structures that require absolute water tightness such as potable water reservoirs and wastewater treatment facilities.
